Stories by Bill Berkowitz

Berkowitz transparente
Bill Berkowitz has been monitoring and writing about right-wing movements for more than two decades. His WorkingForChange.com column, "Conservative Watch", documents the strategies, players, institutions, victories and defeats of the U.S. Right. Born and raised in the Bronx, New York -- just a few blocks from Yankee Stadium -- Berkowitz graduated from Kansas University and moved to California in the mid-70s. He was an organiser with the United Farmworkers Union, and went on to co-found of The DataCenter, an Oakland, California-based public access research library and information centre that provided well-documented data for social justice activists, investigative reporters, journalists and students. In 2005, he received the Journalism Award from the Before Columbus Foundation American Book Awards.

POLITICS-US: In Search of a Legacy, Bush Looks to the Past
Analysis by Bill Berkowitz*
Before 9/11, before the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, before the suspension of habeas corpus, before the administration's tardy and shameful response to Hurricane Katrina, before cronies and Republican congressional leaders were dropping like flies, before former administration operatives were writing unflattering tell-all books, before Dick Cheney said 'So?' in response to a question about public opinion being firmly against the administration, before the Valerie Plame affair, before gas prices were nearly five dollars a gallon, before housing foreclosures hit record numbers, and before his approval rating dipped to all-time lows, there was President George W. Bush's faith-based initiative.
POLITICS-US: McCain's Judicial Plans in Lockstep with Bush
Analysis by Bill Berkowitz*
While it isn't as eye-catching as the latest reports from Iraq and Afghanistan, or as headline-grabbing as rapidly escalating gas prices and the growing number of housing foreclosures, and few voters cast their ballot based on it, the judicial appointments of whomever wins the U.S. presidency in November will have long-lasting ramifications for the country.
RIGHTS-US: California Says, 'We Do'
by Bill Berkowitz*
On Monday evening, with all the Bay Area local television stations and some of the national news networks on hand, Del Martin and Phyllis Lyon, two longtime gay rights activists, (re)married at City Hall in San Francisco, California.
POLITICS-US: Christian Zionist Gathering Mired In Controversy
Analysis by Bill Berkowitz*
The battle lines over Pastor John Hagee have been drawn, redrawn, and are no doubt being drawn again as this is being written. The San Antonio, Texas-based mega-preacher with the multi-million-dollar empire has always been controversial, but these days, the pastor is a lightning rod for critics.
POLITICS-US: Same-Sex Marriage Making a Comeback?
by Bill Berkowitz*
Still not fully embraced by the religious right, Sen. John McCain, the Republican Party's presumptive presidential nominee, has been handed an opportunity to prove his loyalty to the party's most influential and powerful grassroots force.
POLITICS-US: Is Immigration Off the Table in Election 2008?
by Bill Berkowitz*
These days, while you can still pick up a newspaper or turn on a radio or television gabfest and read, hear and see the issue of immigration batted around, it has become less of a hot-button political issue in the United States.
POLITICS-US: Right Puts Obama in Media Crosshairs
by Bill Berkowitz*
The unveiling this week of a new campaign advertisement by the North Carolina Republican Party -- using video of controversial remarks made by Senator Barack Obama's former pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, and attacking two North Carolina Democratic candidates for governor -- is a reminder that the race for the presidency will likely only get uglier as the summer goes on.
POLITICS-US: Religious Right - Growing Pains, or Death Throes?
Analysis by Bill Berkowitz*
During a recent appearance at the National Religious Broadcasters conference, Dr. James Dobson, the founder of Focus on the Family, expressed deep concern about the future of the conservative Christian movement he helped build and define.
POLITICS-US: Future Hazy for Bush's Faith-Based Initiative
by Bill Berkowitz*
With the days of his administration numbered, President George W. Bush is working to shore up what was intended to be the centrepiece of his domestic policy agenda, his faith-based initiative.
POLITICS-US: Primordial Right-Wing Think Tank Still a Player
by Bill Berkowitz*
Last month, the Heritage Foundation, Washington's largest and one of its most influential conservative think tanks, celebrated its 35th anniversary of saying no to so-called 'big government' and yes to privatisation, deregulation, eviscerating the United States' social safety net, 'traditional family values' and pre-emptive military strikes and a muscular foreign policy.
